Artist Bio

Melanie Bricker, MAB13, calls home Kennewick, WA of Tri-Cities. She is earning her undergraduate BFA degree from Washington State University. She is studying multidisciplinary studies, wood crafting, printmaking, and photography. In photography, she takes influence from Ansle Adams, Roy Decarava, and her father. Melanie focuses on the empirical and the temporary, capturing of “in the moment”, also working with the “art for art sake”. With print making more of a story telling and meaning behind every work. Wood crafting is a close to home related one that was influenced by her grandfather and those working in the wood shop at WSU. Many influences art taken from her own history or historical culture or of those close to her. Melanie came up with MAB13 with parts of her name and the original studio number she has at Washington State University.

Artist Statement

I create photos and work about myself. Wanting to open myself up to the world with a recent work and trying to show the emotions that I go through in my everyday life, and the way that I see the world. I make prints that talk about my connections, with people, and myself. I want to talk about myself and others people history. I make prints that talk about the connections with other people, others people's history and my own. I have been studying Korean Folk art and the connection that I have created through my significant other and his family. I want to write about their history and the ties that they have to their culture. Similarly I started making ties and research of my own heritage. Looking at the book of Kells and the history behind Celtic and Irish culture. Talking about experiences that I have had with those around me, the world, and with myself. My artwork i create an attachment and show the connection behind them. Printmaking is the final thought of my opinion, and could be the take off for others, that is what I envision. It is interesting when you make something simple and human. To make simple but complex art can challenge people and open their mind, see things from a different perspective. I want to show what I have been through and be able to speak for others. Talking about when the simple minded intersects with the complex thoughts and social situations. I want the viewers to understand what it means to have a learning disability and what that means in life.
